Playa del Carmen has been chosen as the location for the 2025 World Beach Volleyball Tour. The announcement was made by the Mayor of Solidaridad, Estefanía Mercado, alongside Quintana Roo Governor Mara Lezama. The tour will have two stops in Mexico, starting with the Yucatan Challenge in the Port of Progreso from March 19th to 23rd, followed by the Elite 16 Playa del Carmen from March 26th to 30th. These events will feature the world's top players.
The press conference also included Joaquín Díaz Mena, the Governor of Yucatan, and Rommel Pacheco, the head of the National Commission for Physical Culture and Sports (CONADE). They shared details about the international competition, which aims to promote tourism and generate economic benefits for local communities. The competition also aims to inspire young people to take up the sport. The events are crucial for the teams involved, as they offer essential points for world ranking, impacting qualifications for the World Championship and the Olympic Games.
Mayor Estefanía Mercado emphasized that this event positions Playa del Carmen as a premier location for hosting international sporting events. She said, "Playa del Carmen is ready to welcome the world's best volleyball players and contribute to Governor Mara Lezama's efforts to make Quintana Roo the top sports tourism destination."
The Mayor also highlighted that the event will generate significant revenue for the hotel, restaurant, and transport sectors. It will also boost tourism, strengthening the Playa del Carmen city brand and promoting the "Let's Playa" app. She reaffirmed her government's commitment to making Playa del Carmen not only a host for world-class sporting events but also a city where sports play a crucial role in rebuilding social fabric and providing opportunities for young people.
The 2025 World Beach Volleyball Tour will take place from March 26th to 30th at Fundadores Park beach. The event will feature 24 men's and women's teams, 180 athletes, 120 coaches, 30 referees, 16 delegates, and over 10,000 spectators from countries including Argentina, Austria, Canada, Chile, England, United States, Estonia, Spain, France, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Lithuania, Mexico, Poland, Portugal, Sweden, Switzerland, and Ukraine.
A temporary stadium with a capacity of over 2,000 people will be set up in front of the Portal Maya for the competition. Spectators will have the chance to watch Olympic, world, and continental champions compete.
