A New Culinary Attraction for Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen is set to shine nationally and internationally with its first-ever Taco Festival, “Sabor que une, tradición que perdura” (Flavors That Unite, Traditions That Last), taking place March 30–31 at Plaza 28 de Julio. The event will bring together local restaurants, culinary students, hotel industry professionals, and the public to celebrate one of Mexico’s most iconic dishes.

This festival is the result of a collaborative effort between local citizens and the municipal government, aiming to establish a signature gastronomic event in the region. With corn tortillas as the foundation, visitors can expect a wide variety of flavors showcasing the richness of Mexican cuisine.

A Competition to Find the Best Taco

At a press conference held at El Capricho restaurant, Jesús Antonio Pérez Ayala, Director of Markets, announced that registration is open to the public, but participation will be limited to 50 competitors due to space restrictions set by Civil Protection authorities.

During the festival, taqueros will compete in a taco-making contest, where the top three winners will receive cash prizes. Judges will evaluate entries based on:

  • Ingredient combination and flavor balance
  • Freshness and seasoning
  • Tortilla texture and meat preparation
  • Presentation and cleanliness
  • Unique ingredients, innovative techniques, and fusion flavors
  • Quality of salsas and garnishes
  • Ease of eating, ensuring the right balance between tortilla and fillings

A Celebration of Culinary Identity

Both locals and visitors will have the opportunity to enjoy a diverse selection of regional tacos, offering something for every taste.

Chef David Guevara, Director of Sentido Gourmet, highlighted the festival’s significance in showcasing Playa del Carmen’s cultural diversity:
“We are a city made up of people from all over the country and the world, and events like this define us as a unique and vibrant community.”

The press conference also featured Margarita Sánchez Chaparro, Director of Operations and Tourism Training; Mariano González, Organizing Committee Member; Manuel Orlando Tun Noh, Coordinator of the Municipal Institute of Culture and Arts; and Nelly Gil, Deputy Director of Citizen Participation.

With its diverse flavors, lively atmosphere, and celebration of tradition, the First Taco Festival of Playa del Carmen is set to become a must-visit event for food lovers and visitors alike.
