Playa del Carmen, known for its stunning natural beauty and coastline, is reportedly losing its sandy areas. Activists, environmentalists, and local residents have raised concerns about the environmental damage being inflicted on the destination's beaches. A campaign has been initiated on social media to raise awareness about the issue, featuring a video with a strong message: "Without Playa del Carmen".

The video shares concerns about the diminishing appeal of the beaches, with comments such as, "We attract many visitors due to our natural beauty and our beaches. Is this the paradise we once knew? Tourists arrive and are disappointed, frustrated, because there is no longer a coastline."

The activists and locals warn that if the natural beauty of Playa del Carmen is depleted, it could deter tourists. They note that 85 percent of tourists come for the sun and beach, only to be surprised by the eroded coasts, lack of sand, and abundance of sargasso. They stress the importance of preserving these natural bathing areas, as they are home to numerous species.

The community is urged to defend Playa del Carmen, as it is a home for all, not just a few. In response to this campaign, the Moce Yax Cuxtal organization has launched various initiatives focused on the comprehensive management of the coastal area. This action addresses the growing concern about beach erosion, a problem exacerbated by human intervention.

Since 2001, Moce Yax Cuxtal has been working to strengthen local capacities for the integrated management of the coastal area and the protection of sandy areas, which are vital for the quality and sustainability of the coasts. The natural bathing resorts of Playa del Carmen are crucial for the local economy, attracting thousands of national and international tourists each year.

Activists emphasize the importance of informing and educating citizens to ensure proper beach management, which will guarantee their sustainability and resilience in the face of climate change. Erosion, loss of ecosystem services, and rapid urbanization are among the challenges faced by the sandy areas from Xcalacoco to Playacar.
