Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo, March 19, 2025 – The transformation of Playa del Carmen's old Municipal Palace into the "July 28 Cultural Center and Museum" has begun, according to Mayor Estefanía Mercado. This new cultural hub is expected to celebrate the city's identity and enhance its tourism appeal.

During a meeting with federal authorities who are backing this strategic project, Mayor Mercado expressed her enthusiasm for this historic development. She emphasized that in Playa del Carmen, culture is seen as a right, not a privilege. The goal of the meeting was to ensure the technical, legal, and financial feasibility of the cultural center and museum.

The Mayor highlighted that this project is crucial for reinforcing Playa del Carmen's cultural identity and boosting its tourism sector. She was joined by Ernesto Martínez Cuéllar, the general director of the Municipal Institute of Culture and the Arts (IMCAS). Mayor Mercado praised Cuéllar for his unwavering dedication and commitment to making this dream a reality.

Mayor Mercado reiterated her pledge to spread culture throughout the city. "We will continue to work together to create a more culturally rich and vibrant Playa del Carmen," she said.

The meeting was also attended by Arturo Gómez Martínez, deputy director of Ethnography at the National Museum of Anthropology and History; Lluvia Alejandra Sepúlveda Jiménez, general director of Formation and Cultural Management of the Ministry of Culture of Mexico; Fritz Glockner Corte, general director of the Educal Library Network, and Yokoyani Sánchez Almada Montaño, from the office of the Director of Operation and Integral Projects of FONART.
