Between January and May of this year, Mexico's cities saw an influx of 19.6 million tourists staying in hotel rooms, while beach destinations welcomed 14.7 million visitors. Playacar, located in Playa del Carmen, topped the list as the most visited beach destination, according to occupancy rates.

Data collected by DataTur revealed that the top tourist hotspots in terms of hotel occupancy were Playacar with 91%, Akumal with 83.9%, Nuevo Nayarit with 81.8%, Cabo San Lucas with 79.6%, Cancún with 78.2%, and Playa del Carmen with 77.4%.

In the first five months of the year, tourists in Quintana Roo showed a preference for the Riviera Maya corridor over Cancún. Beach destinations had an average of 142,828 occupied rooms, while city destinations saw 121,080 occupied rooms. This represents a 2.4% increase compared to the same period in 2023.

The head of the Federal Ministry of Tourism also highlighted the importance of the hotel industry to tourism. From 2019 to 2023, there was an increase of 87,000 new hotel rooms, bringing the total to 895,000 rooms across Mexico. This growth has secured Mexico's position as the seventh largest globally in terms of hotel infrastructure.
