Authorities in Quintana Roo are set to review surveillance footage in an attempt to identify the attackers of a Morena party activist. The incident occurred just before the third and final presidential debate in Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo. The victim, known as Óscar, was a member of Morena and was shot nine times in the Ejido neighborhood where party members were gathering to watch the debate.

Óscar was part of the team for Estefanía Mercado, the candidate for the municipal presidency of Solidaridad from the 4T. The shooting, taking place just 100 meters from the event venue, created a wave of fear and uncertainty among Morena party members. While the attackers remain at large, authorities are hopeful that surveillance cameras in the area will aid in their identification and capture.

This is the second assassination of a political activist in Quintana Roo in the past week. The previous Saturday, Manuel Santiago Tun, campaign coordinator for Morena candidate Alberto Batun Chulim, was also killed. Manuel Santiago was ambushed and shot multiple times upon arriving home. The gunshots alerted neighbors who quickly notified authorities. Despite being rushed to a specialty clinic, Manuel Santiago succumbed to his injuries.
