The reinstatement of Viva Aerobus's direct flight connecting Monterrey and Cozumel is set to bring a bustling Easter holiday season. The flight will operate twice weekly throughout the year, increasing to four times during the Easter week, according to Pablo Aguilar Torres, a representative of CPTQ on the island.
From April 3, Cozumel will maintain a direct air link with Monterrey, offering two weekly flights on Thursdays and Sundays. This will increase to four times weekly starting from Easter week. The Airbus 320 aircraft used for these flights can accommodate 240 passengers and typically operates at 80 percent capacity, attracting a significant influx of both national and international tourists.
Aguilar Torres stated that this flight, which reopens a crucial market in Monterrey, will continue with regular operations until the end of the year. Efforts are underway to promote the destination with the aim of maintaining this connectivity permanently. He noted a positive trend in passenger arrivals from this destination.
To achieve this, promotional events and tourism fairs have been held in various states of Mexico, particularly in Monterrey. This included the Forever Wedding Summit at the end of March, where Cozumel was marketed as a wedding destination in conjunction with the new flight.
Cozumel is expecting an economic uplift this Easter. However, Aguilar Torres stressed the importance of continued promotional efforts. At the upcoming Mexico's Tourist Market, efforts will be made to promote all of Cozumel's air connections, both national and international. He highlighted the flights to Mexico City and the recent one to Monterrey for the domestic market. Aguilar Torres pointed out that while winter is the primary tourism season for Cozumel, Easter and summer are also significant, making ongoing promotion crucial to sustaining and increasing visitor numbers to this popular tourist destination.
