Cancún and Playa del Carmen in Chaos: Power Outages Spark Protests

On Tuesday, numerous power outages were reported in neighborhoods across Cancún and Playa del Carmen. These outages have affected residents in both municipalities, leading to protests and road blockages in hopes of prompting authorities to take action. One such protest took place in the municipality of Solidaridad.

Preliminary reports suggest that the power outages in Cancún have affected region 227, as well as the areas around Kabah Avenue, Tules, and Rancho Viejo Avenue.

In Solidaridad, residents of the 'In House' neighborhood took to the streets in protest. They blocked Constituyentes Avenue and Lilis Avenue just before 6 pm on Tuesday. The demonstration, which attracted over a hundred participants, was a plea for an immediate resolution to the ongoing power outage, which has left them without electricity for over 15 hours. Despite the arrival of police officers at 9 pm, the protests continued, with residents resorting to burning mattresses. It remains unclear when power will be fully restored in affected areas, including west Playa del Carmen, La Guadalupana, and the Colosio colony.

In response to these events, the National Electricity Commission announced a temporary suspension of electricity supply on May 7th. This measure was taken to improve the stability of the national electric service and prevent future disruptions. The Commission, in collaboration with CENACE, is currently working to restore power to the affected areas.
