The Progreso Carnival in Yucatán is a highly anticipated event in the region, known for its lively atmosphere, cultural traditions, music, and parades. Typically, the carnival takes place in February or March, depending on the start of Lent. The festivities span several days and reach their peak on Carnival Tuesday.
The carnival is renowned for its vibrant parades that wind through the main streets of Progreso. These parades feature spectacularly decorated floats and groups of dancers who entertain the crowd with traditional music. Progreso, a port city famed for its stunning beaches, becomes the heart of the celebration. The festivities are held along the city's boardwalk and central areas, providing attendees with a chance to enjoy both the carnival and the coastal views.
The festivities kick off on February 20 with the traditional Burning of the Bad Mood event, which will take place at 7:00 PM at the Municipal Palace. The grand coronation of the Carnival Kings is set for Saturday, February 22 at 6:00 PM, at the Progreso Sports Unit, featuring a performance by singer and actress María José. On Thursday, February 27 at 6:00 PM, the decorated floats will be showcased at the Municipal Palace.
The celebration of King Momo will be marked by its focus on fantasy and magical characters. The party will continue with the Corso Walk on the 28th at 10:00 PM, followed by the Fantasy and Masks Walk on Saturday, March 1 on the Traditional Malecon. The Sunday Walk, scheduled for March 2 at 12:00 PM, will feature actress Cecilia Galliano, and a concert by Edwin Luna and La Trakalosa de Monterrey at 8:00 PM. The lineup continues with the Walk and Regional Vaquería on March 3, which will include a comedy show by Ismael Salazar Mactá and regional music. The Battle of Flowers on Tuesday, March 4 will feature actor Sebastián Rulli and music from Matute at 4:00 PM. The festivities will conclude on March 5 with the Burning of Juan Carnaval at 7:00 PM.
