The High Port of Progreso is set to put Yucatan on the map globally, despite facing a few challenges, according to the president of Index.
The port's expansion is expected to enhance Yucatan's competitiveness in international trade, opening up new sea routes to Europe and Asia. This development is anticipated to have a positive effect on the regional economy, says Alejandro Guerrero Lozano, the president of the Export Maquiladoras Association in Yucatan (Index).
Lozano emphasized that once the expansion is operational, Yucatan will attract attention in the realms of international trade and cruise tourism. He pointed out that the port's expansion will allow 60,000-ton merchant ships to dock at Progreso, a feat currently impossible due to the sea's shallow depth and narrow width.
The port's expansion will enable travel to various Asian destinations such as Japan, Singapore, Oceania, New Zealand, Hong Kong, and South Korea. It will also broaden maritime routes to Europe.
