State Prosecutor’s Office in Tulum Attacked Over Alleged Crime Deal

An accusation has been made against a detective for allegedly failing to uphold agreements with organized crime, leading to an attack on the state Prosecutor's Office in Tulum. This incident underscores the inability of all three levels of government to effectively combat criminal cells in Tulum, allowing them to operate with impunity and even openly defy authorities, as demonstrated by the attack on the Prosecutor's Office.

Allegations of police complicity with criminal organizations are a recurring issue in Quintana Roo. This issue has not only incited various attacks on government facilities, but has also resulted in the loss of numerous police officers' lives across different municipalities.

On February 9th, several threats were made against Josué Cárdenas Rosales, the commander of the Investigation Police (PDI) of the State Prosecutor's Office in Tulum, for allegedly failing to fulfill commitments with a criminal organization. A banner was displayed on Sunday morning at the Casa de la Cultura Maya, accusing Rosales of multiple crimes including involvement in several disappearances in Cozumel and a murder in July 2024.

Prosecutor's Office Building Under Attack

The State Prosecutor's Office in Tulum was targeted in an armed attack on Sunday night. Unknown assailants fired at least 20 shots at the building's facade, though no injuries were reported.

The attack took place around 8:00 PM when armed individuals approached the Prosecutor's Office and opened fire with high-caliber weapons, despite the presence of bystanders. Witnesses reported that upon hearing the initial gunshots, those in the vicinity sought cover to avoid being hit.

Following the attack, municipal and state authorities launched an operation to locate the perpetrators. The area was cordoned off by the Municipal Police, the National Guard, and the Prosecutor's Office for the collection of ballistic evidence.

The incident has sparked concern among Tulum residents due to the escalating levels of violence in the region. As of now, authorities have not released an official statement regarding the motive behind the attack or any progress in identifying the culprits.
