A Contentious Race
The recent mayoral election in Puerto Aventuras was marked by a dynamic campaign period, featuring three candidates vying for leadership: incumbent Mayor Gilberto Gómez of the Dorada slate, Graciela Isabel Moreno representing the Blanca slate, and Dámaris del Carmen Ortega from the Cafe Oscura slate.
Campaigning officially commenced on December 5, 2024, following the issuance of participation certificates by Luis Herrera Quiam, Secretary General of the Municipality and President of the Operating Commission of the Neighborhood Assembly for the Election.
During the campaign, Dámaris Ortega, a 36-year-old community leader and hospitality worker, emerged as a prominent challenger. She criticized Mayor Gómez’s administration for unmet promises and inadequate public services, particularly highlighting deficiencies in healthcare and education infrastructure. Ortega advocated for the construction of an IMSS hospital and new educational institutions to serve the growing population.

Gómez, came under scrutiny for his alleged alliance with influential developer Román Rivera Torres. Residents and opposition candidates claim that Gómez has prioritized the interests of wealthy developers and marina residents over the broader community. Critics argue that his close relationship with Rivera Torres has allowed unchecked development while neglecting critical issues like infrastructure, public safety, and equitable access to natural resources.
Despite these challenges, Mayor Gómez’s campaign was closely aligned with the current Solidaridad administration. This alignment suggested strong political backing, which some believed would influence the election outcome.

The election concluded with Mayor Gómez securing re-election for the 2024-2027 term, obtaining 2,818 votes. The orderly and civil participation of Puerto Aventuras residents was noted, reflecting the community’s commitment to democratic processes and active civic engagement.
This election underscores the evolving political landscape in Puerto Aventuras, highlighting the community’s desire for development and improved public services. The forthcoming term presents an opportunity for the re-elected administration to address these concerns and fulfill the aspirations of its constituents.
