The Cenote Route in Puerto Morelos may soon be home to a new bike path. The project, currently under development by the local Department of Tourism, aims to improve mobility in the area and attract more visitors. Raúl Guadarrama García, the Secretary of Sustainable Tourism of Puerto Morelos, shared that the proposed bike path would span the entire route, providing an additional mode of transport for those visiting the local attractions or traveling to Leona Vicario. However, the project requires land donations from local landowners.
The Cenote Route has experienced significant growth, particularly with the addition of the Mayan train. As a result, there are plans to widen the road and obtain approval for the bike path, which could also facilitate more sporting events. The route is currently used by two thousand people daily, including both tourists and locals, highlighting the need for improved mobility.
Long-term plans even include expanding the passageway to two lanes. A comprehensive study is underway, along with negotiations with local landowners about the route. It is hoped that the path can be established through land donations without major complications. The landowners, who are aware of the project, have shown their support.
The Department of Tourism is also planning to host more events in the area, starting with a gastronomic festival. They are also developing strategies to attract more visitors, with a particular focus on adventure and sports tourism.
