“Free Pet Sterilization Campaign in Puerto Morelos”

For the first time ever, the Department of Animal Welfare has launched a pet sterilization campaign in the agricultural region of Puerto Morelos. The campaign provides free services to around 25 animals, focusing on dogs and cats. The General Health Department also supported this initiative, which was implemented with the help of Planned Pethood International and two local veterinarians, one from Cancun and another from Puerto Morelos.

In addition to sterilization, the campaign also includes the administration of antibiotics, deworming treatments, and tick baths to pets. This comprehensive care is in line with the five freedoms outlined by the World Organization for Animal Health, which are essential for the wellbeing of all animal species. These freedoms include the right to live free from hunger, thirst, and malnutrition; free from fear and distress; free from physical and thermal discomfort; free from pain, injury, and disease; and free to behave naturally.

To further promote animal welfare, the campaign also includes educational talks for local families. These discussions focus on responsible pet ownership and the importance of preventing overpopulation of dogs and cats in the area.
