Puerto Morelos, Quintana Roo — Approximately 150 competitors from across the globe gathered in Puerto Morelos for the first-ever Pickleball Open 2025 tournament, held at the Isaac Hamui Sports Complex basketball court. The event, which took place on April 26, 2025, featured teams from Canada, the United States, Australia, France, and local participants from Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen, and Isla Mujeres.
Promoting Health and Community Through Sports
Alexander May Chi, Secretary of Welfare for Puerto Morelos, delivered the inaugural serve on behalf of Mayor Blanca Merari Tziu Muñoz. In his remarks, May Chi emphasized the municipality’s commitment to fostering a healthy society through sports.
"We are betting on building a strong society by contributing to healthy families, which is why we promote sports. All disciplines present an opportunity to maintain good health," he stated.
The tournament was organized by Consuelo Ramírez, founder of the local Pickleball club Piratas de Puerto Morelos. Ramírez expressed gratitude to municipal sports authorities for supporting the event and recognizing Pickleball, a sport that combines elements of tennis, paddle tennis, badminton, and table tennis. The discipline has been practiced in the municipality for two years and has contributed to physical activity for both children and adults, offering benefits such as disease prevention, social interaction, and mental well-being.
Municipal Support for Sports Development
Renán Cruz Ramírez, General Director of the Municipal Sports Institute, welcomed participants and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to providing spaces for all sports disciplines.
"Our goal is to open opportunities for all sports to develop and attract local youth, creating environments of healthy coexistence and peace," he said.
The event was also attended by professional Pickleball players Leticia Tinajero Carpió and Luc Richard, further elevating the tournament’s profile.
The Pickleball Open 2025 marks a milestone in Puerto Morelos’ efforts to diversify recreational and competitive sports offerings while promoting community health and international engagement.
