Devastating Coral Loss at Puerto Morelos Reef Park

Puerto Morelos Reef Park has suffered a significant loss with 80% of its coral nurseries dying off due to rising sea temperatures and bleaching. The year 2023 was especially devastating for the coral population, marking one of the worst crises to date from which the reefs have yet to recover.

According to Maricarmen Garcia Rivas, the director of this protected natural area, 18 kilometers of Acropora Palmata and Millepora Complanata species perished along the 20-kilometer reef crest. The 2023 crisis was the fourth major bleaching event globally. However, as temperature fluctuations and water nutrient levels stabilize, the corals should experience less stress.

Unfortunately, the Endrofibro cylindro coral species was entirely eradicated from the National Park due to bleaching. The colonies that managed to survive were primarily located at the reef's ends, likely due to water turnover.

Rivas noted that while 2024 has seen some survivors of the bleaching event, the damage from the previous year resulted in many colonies' death. As part of their recovery strategy, some nurseries have been relocated to deeper parts of the reef.

Younger corals have shown the most resilience, but many "babies" require protection from temperature changes. Rivas suggests that residents can contribute to the conservation effort by reducing their use of detergents to prevent water pollution and improving wastewater treatment plants.

In a positive development, the park recently won a private donor competition, securing a vessel and drones to enhance supervision. This, combined with increased training and coordination with the State Attorney General's Office and the Federal Prosecutor's Office for Environmental Protection (Profepa), will allow for more effective monitoring and conservation efforts.
