Puerto Morelos, Mexico — Puerto Morelos will host the Reef Race Regatta for the first time, bringing together top national and international paddlers in a high-profile competition on April 27. The event, organized by the Quintana Roo Canoeing Association, aims to elevate the region’s profile in water sports while boosting tourism.

A Milestone for Sports Tourism

Raúl Guadarrama García, Secretary of Sustainable Tourism for Puerto Morelos, confirmed the event’s details in an interview. He emphasized that the regatta—featuring kayak and canoe races—adheres to global competition standards, ensuring a professional and well-regulated event.

“This competition not only promotes sports tourism but also drives hotel occupancy, as participants often travel with their families to enjoy the destination,” Guadarrama said.

The inaugural edition of the Reef Race Regatta was held in Bacalar, but organizers selected Puerto Morelos for its natural advantages. The town’s calm waters, scenic beaches, and proximity to the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef make it an ideal location for paddling sports.

“Puerto Morelos is perfectly suited for these events—its gentle waves, beautiful coastline, and reef ecosystem create an unmatched setting for adventure tourism,” Guadarrama added.

A Showcase for Puerto Morelos

The regatta is expected to attract paddlers of all skill levels, offering them the chance to navigate the area’s crystal-clear waters. The event further solidifies Puerto Morelos’ reputation as a “Pueblo con Encanto” (Town with Charm) and a growing hub for sports tourism.

Local authorities anticipate the competition will draw significant attention to the region’s potential for hosting future international sporting events.
