Governor Mara Lezama has proposed the establishment of a Women's Secretariat in Quintana Roo to the State Congress.
This initiative, spearheaded by Governor Lezama Espinosa, seeks to enact legislative reforms to create a Women's Secretariat within the state. This move makes Quintana Roo the first state to follow President Claudia Sheinbaum's lead in elevating the National Women's Institute to a State Secretariat. These reforms, along with those from April 2024, aim to ensure that all women can fully exercise their human and social rights, including the protection and expansion of women's rights.
Governor Lezama has emphasized that in her administration, women's empowerment is a priority. The goal is to create an environment where women can live peacefully, with full respect for their rights. Following President Sheinbaum's example, the commitment to protect women, respect substantive equality, ensure a life free from violence, and eliminate the wage gap between men and women in Quintana Roo is reaffirmed.
"From the start of our administration, we have promoted a new social policy through the New Agreement for the Welfare and Development of Quintana Roo. This policy places women as the cornerstone of our state, ensuring gender parity in public administration and equal opportunities for development," explained the governor.
The proposed initiative will have significant impacts on several laws within the state, including the Organic Law of the Public Administration, the Law of the Quintana Roo Institute of Women, the Law for Equality between Women and Men, and the Law of Access for Women to a Life Free from Violence. It also complements the constitutional reform.
The laws to be revised include the Law of Assistance and Prevention of Domestic Violence, the Youth Law, the Law of Prevention, Comprehensive Care and Control for HIV, the Comprehensive School Security Law, the Victims Law, and the Law on Human Trafficking.
