Oceanographer Alejandro Bravo Quezada, director of Ocean Solution and a member of the Technical Advisory Committee for Sargassum in Quintana Roo, has issued a warning about a significant mass of sargassum. This large collection of seaweed, approximately 25 kilometers in diameter, is located off the coast of Tulum and is expected to affect various parts of the Quintana Roo coastline.
Bravo Quezada predicts that this large volume of macroalgae will spread across the Riviera Maya, Puerto Morelos, and Cancún. "The season has already begun and it is predicted to be intense. We need to be prepared for a significant presence of this seaweed," he warned. He further noted that dealing with this phenomenon has become an annual challenge for both local authorities and the community.
Bravo Quezada urged the Secretariat of the Navy to improve communication with the technical council in order to better strategize for containing the sargassum. "Unfortunately, the Navy has become somewhat insular. They have their own strategy and, while it is being implemented effectively, there should be more communication to facilitate interaction between the community and the government on this issue," he said.
The oceanographer recalled that in past years, a successful collaboration was achieved when the Navy took charge of the sargassum problem. However, he expressed regret that current decisions are being made without fully considering the recommendations of the Technical Committee.
