Quintana Roo, Mexico, has concluded 2024 as a top tourism destination, according to the local Ministry of Tourism. The region's hotel occupancy rate for the Mexican Caribbean was reported at 78.4 percent. Josefina Rodríguez Zamora, Mexico's Secretary of Tourism, stated that Quintana Roo's tourism sector is well-positioned as we move into 2025.
Hotel occupancy rates were particularly high in several areas, including Costa Mujeres at 83.2%, Cancun at 78.6%, Puerto Morelos at 78.5%, Rivera Maya at 79.5%, and Tulum at 75%. Isla Cozumel, Isla Mujeres, and Gran Costa Maya also had notable occupancy rates of 65.8%, 64.2%, and 56.7% respectively.
In the week from December 14 to 20, the region welcomed 472,286 tourists. The majority of visitors hailed from the United States (37.3%) and Mexico itself (35.5%). Other significant numbers of tourists came from Canada (9.1%), the United Kingdom (2.3%), and Colombia (1.5%).
During this same period, the region saw the arrival of 2,186 flights. The majority of these, 1,946 flights, landed at Cancun International Airport, with a mix of 634 domestic and 1,312 international flights. Other airports, including those in Tulum, Cozumel, and Chetumal, also saw a healthy mix of domestic and international arrivals.
Rodríguez Zamora emphasized the importance of air connectivity for the state's tourism industry. Between December 1 and 20, the region received flights from a variety of international and domestic locations, including 38 flights from the United States, 27 domestic flights, 18 from Canada, 17 from Europe, and 16 from Latin America.
In the first 20 days of December, Cancun International Airport alone received arrivals from 26 domestic destinations, 38 cities in the United States, 18 cities in Canada, 16 cities in Central, Caribbean, and South America, and 17 cities in Europe, via 51 different airlines. Similarly, Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport in Tulum welcomed tourists from a variety of domestic and international destinations.
