In an extraordinary session held in the early hours of Thursday, May 30, the Electoral Institute of Quintana Roo (Ieqroo) decided to reprint 105 ballots that had gone missing from district offices in Playa del Carmen and Cozumel. The electoral councilors approved the replacement of the ballots, which were reported as lost, not stolen.
The missing ballots include four for the local deputy election of District 9, one for the Cozumel mayoralty, and 100 for the election of the municipal presidency of Solidaridad. The disappearance of these ballots sparked controversy within the General Council of the Ieqroo, with some arguing it was a case of misplacement rather than theft.
However, there was disagreement among councilors about the clarity and accuracy of the information regarding the lost votes. Questions were raised about how the ballots were lost and why only an administrative process was initiated instead of a criminal one. There was also a request for clarification on whether the loss was due to negligence by a member of the Ieqroo or a polling station official.
The task of reprinting the ballots will be undertaken by a company based in the State of Mexico, which is responsible for producing these materials for each election. It was also clarified that the new ballots will include security measures to prevent the use of the lost ones.
