Quintana Roo, located in the Mexican Caribbean, is celebrating International Biodiversity Day by honoring its natural riches and biodiversity. The region is home to significant protected reserves and ecosystems, inhabited by hundreds of unique species.

Among these species is the majestic whale shark, the largest fish in the world. These creatures visit the island of Holbox from May to September, providing a spectacle for visitors in a natural and controlled environment.

Holbox has recently opened its season for spotting and swimming with the whale shark, also known as the domino fish. The island, part of the Lázaro Cárdenas municipality, has been a leader in offering this unique experience for over 25 years, attracting tourists from around the globe.

International Biological Diversity Day is celebrated annually on May 22, and has been since 2002. This year's celebration also marks the beginning of preparations for the Conference of the Parties (COP 16), set to take place in Colombia from October 21 to November 1, 2024.
