Quintana Roo is currently ranked fourth in Mexico for the highest number of dengue cases, according to recent data from the State Health Secretariat (SESA). So far this year, the state has seen 793 cases and two deaths. The majority of these cases, around 70 percent, are in Benito Juárez. This has led to ongoing concern about the disease, which is transmitted by the Aedes Aegypti mosquito, also known for spreading Zika and Chikungunya.

Authorities have stressed that efforts to combat dengue will be ongoing, given the state's ideal environmental conditions for mosquito breeding. In 2024, the fight against dengue began with operations to control larvae and thermal fogging in areas where cases have been reported. The main focus of the teams responsible for controlling vectors throughout the state is to combat the presence of the Aedes Aegypti mosquito. Despite a decrease in numbers, cases continue to occur.

As such, residents of Quintana Roo's 11 municipalities are being urged to take preventative measures at home. This includes cleaning their homes, yards, gardens, and rooftops. While fumigation can eliminate adult mosquitoes, it's also important to remove any containers or waste that could collect water and serve as a breeding ground for larvae.
