Quintana Roo, a prominent state in the Mexican Caribbean and a national leader in tourism, concluded 2024 with a record-breaking 20 million visitors. This achievement matches the record set in 2023, despite the uncertainties caused by the global airline industry and elections in Mexico and the United States.

Popular destinations such as Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum contributed to this impressive visitor count. Throughout the year, these locations maintained an average hotel occupancy rate of 85%, according to Bernardo Cueto Riestra, the Secretary of Tourism for Quintana Roo.

Riestra highlighted the significance of the state's four airports in sustaining tourism growth. The airports located in Cancun, Cozumel, Chetumal, and Tulum, which celebrated its first year of operation, maintained an average of 600 daily flights, peaking at 765 operations on the busiest days.

"Quintana Roo concludes the year with a strong influx of tourism. It's been a pivotal and challenging year for global tourism, and especially for our country with the elections in Mexico and the United States. Despite these challenges, we anticipate closing the year with over 20 million visitors," Riestra stated.

Quintana Roo is not just a tourism leader in Mexico, but also contributes significantly to the country's overall tourism revenue. As the sixth most visited country in the world, nearly 50% of Mexico's total tourism revenue is generated by Quintana Roo, as reported by the state's governor, Mara Lezama, earlier this week.
