Mexico City, Mexico — In a bid to establish Quintana Roo as a leading destination for international aquatic sports competitions, Jacobo Arzate Hop, president of the Quintana Roo Sports Commission (CODEQ), met with María José Alcalá, president of the Mexican Olympic Committee (COM), and Husáin Al-Musallam, president of World Aquatics. The meeting, held in Mexico City, aimed to explore opportunities to host high-profile events that would bolster sports tourism in the state, aligning with the New Agreement for Wellbeing and Development championed by Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa.

Strategic Collaboration for Sports Tourism

Representing Governor Lezama, Arzate emphasized Quintana Roo’s potential to host world-class aquatic events. “We are thrilled that Quintana Roo is being considered as a prime location for aquatic sports competitions,” he stated. “This meeting allowed us to discuss and analyze the types of events we can host, further expanding the disciplines showcased in our state, as prioritized by Governor Lezama, who supports sports in all their forms.”

The discussions highlighted Quintana Roo’s existing infrastructure, including the Olympic and Semi-Olympic Pools in Cancún, the Diving Well in Chetumal, and the Boston College Diving Facility. The state’s pristine beaches were also proposed as potential venues for international competitions.

María José Alcalá of the COM underscored Quintana Roo’s advantages, noting, “The state boasts both natural and built environments ideal for aquatic sports. Hosting events here would significantly benefit Mexican athletes.”

Husáin Al-Musallam of World Aquatics—the global governing body for aquatic sports within the Olympic movement—expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, which seeks to promote and expand aquatic disciplines.

The initiative aligns with broader efforts to rehabilitate and leverage Quintana Roo’s sports facilities, reinforcing its reputation as a hub for major sporting events.
