Quintana Roo has secured the third spot in attracting Tourism Foreign Direct Investment (TFDI) in Mexico for the first quarter of 2024. The region drew in foreign capital amounting to $74 million, accounting for 15% of the total TFDI generated across the country. This achievement further cements Quintana Roo's status as a leading player in the tourism sector.

Baja California Sur topped the list, bringing in $161 million, which constituted 34% of the total TFDI. Mexico City followed in second place with $144 million. Yucatan and Jalisco trailed behind Quintana Roo with $29.5 million and $22.6 million respectively.

The majority (56%) of these investments are concentrated in sectors such as serviced apartments and furnished homes with hotel services. Air transport came in second, followed by hotels offering integrated services.

Countries such as the United States, Canada, France, Spain, and Germany have made significant contributions in five sectors. These include organizing excursions, creating tourist packages for agencies, and managing airports and heliports.

Tourism Foreign Direct Investment refers to the flow of capital from overseas, specifically for tourism-related activities. Quintana Roo has seen a rise in capital compared to the end of 2023. In the last quarter of the previous year, the region closed with $58.5 million in investments.

The Mexican Caribbean continues to attract projects due to new infrastructure developments like the Tulum "Felipe Carrillo Puerto" Airport, the Maya Train, and the Nichupté Bridge in Cancun. These projects have drawn investments for new hotels and real estate developments focusing on vacation rentals. Additionally, more airline routes and airlines are aiming to establish themselves in the region's four airports.

Local projections for 2024 aim for a tourist growth of 4.5%, following a record-breaking 21 million visitor arrivals in 2023.
