The Ministry of Public Works of Quintana Roo (Seop) has initiated the tendering process for the construction of arch roof and light domes in the region's public schools. According to the first call, Seop, under the leadership of José Rafael Lara Díaz, plans to construct 42 arch roof domes in as many schools across several municipalities, including Othón P. Blanco, Benito Juárez, Solidaridad, Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Bacalar, José María Morelos, and Lázaro Cárdenas.

The initial phase will see the construction of these domes in 32 kindergartens, four distance high schools, two Child Development Centers (Cendi), and two primary schools. Additionally, a dome will be built in a Multiple Attention Center (Cam) and a Child Attention Center (CAI).

The second call reveals plans to construct 49 light domes in public schools across several municipalities, including Benito Juárez, Othón P. Blanco, Puerto Morelos, Lázaro Cárdenas, Isla Mujeres, Bacalar, Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Solidaridad, Cozumel, Tulum, and José María Morelos. These domes will be constructed in 24 primary schools, 11 high schools, 10 secondary schools, two Multiple Attention Centers (CAM), and two distance high schools.

Both phases are set to commence on December 13, 2024, with a projected completion period of 90 days. This timeline suggests that all 91 domes should be ready by mid-March 2025.

Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa recently met with Francisco Javier Cabiedes Uranga, the director of the National Institute of Physical Educational Infrastructure (Inifed), to discuss improving school infrastructure across the region. The discussion emphasized the importance of the domes in providing safe spaces for student interaction, cultural activities, and sports.

At the start of the current administration, 1,109 schools lacked domes. To address this, the State Government plans to invest over four billion pesos to ensure no public school is without a dome. The construction of an additional 550 domes, both arch roof and light types, is anticipated in 2025.
