The first Sargassum Transformation Plant in Quintana Roo was recently inaugurated, marking a significant step towards a stronger and more sustainable Puerto Morelos. The plant, operated by Oceanbiosphere, aims to convert seaweed into compost. Municipal president Blanca Merari Tziu Muñoz emphasized that the sargassum phenomenon impacts not only the region's natural beauty, which draws tourists worldwide, but also marine life and the health of coastal communities.
The project is a collaborative effort between the Puerto Morelos municipality and Oceanbiosphere, coordinated with the Secretariat of Ecology and Environment (SEMA) of the Quintana Roo Government. Biologist Benito David Morán Bañuelos, who oversees the Subsecretariat of Environmental Management and Protection of SEMA, stressed the importance of this site in combating one of the most significant environmental challenges of our time.
The plant will process collected sargassum through a meticulous treatment process. The seaweed will be crushed and mixed with organic waste and microorganisms to produce high-quality compost. This innovative method will yield compost with superior properties for enhancing crop growth. The facility has been designed and equipped to meet all environmental and safety standards, setting a precedent for future operations in the industry.
