Holbox Documentary Dives into Quintana Roo’s Shark Fishery

The documentary, "Holbox: Sharks and Sea People", has been selected for the National Exhibition of Scientific Images (MUNIC) 2024. The film explores the economic development of the island of Holbox in Lázaro Cárdenas, Quintana Roo, which is heavily reliant on the resources provided by marine animals.

Produced by marine biologist Nadia Rubio, the documentary delves into the history of the island's shark fisheries. It features interviews with fishermen who discuss their past practices in catching and selling sharks, the techniques they used, and the overfishing that led to a significant reduction in the local shark population.

The film also explores the economic shift that the island has undergone, moving from shark fishing to promoting tourism activities such as swimming with whale sharks.

The documentary reveals a worrying 71 percent decline in shark and ray populations since 1970, prompting local fishermen to look for alternative sources of income. It also highlights that 36 percent of the 1,200 species of sharks and rays are endangered, with Mexico ranking among the top 20 countries for the highest shark catches worldwide.

"Holbox: Sharks and Sea People" is a collaborative effort involving several individuals and organizations, including Daniel Lugo, Alberto Friscione, Igor Rubio, Deborah Bravo, Erick Higuera, Sustainable Sea, Save Our Seas Foundation, and The Rufford Foundation.

The MUNIC is a national showcase dedicated to films and audiovisual productions that focus on science, technology, innovation, and environmental culture. The ninth edition of the exhibition will open on Wednesday, September 18th.
