Boost Your Adventure: Quintana Roo’s Thriving Fishing Industry!

Fishing in Quintana Roo is not only a traditional activity deeply ingrained in the local culture, but also a unique attraction with the potential to generate significant economic revenue, according to representatives from the state's nautical sector. "Cancun needs a strong fishing tournament," stressed Blanca Fernández, a member of the organizing committee for the Captain Ferrat Cup fishing tournament.

The tournament is scheduled for June 15 and 16, coinciding with Father's Day. On average, Quintana Roo hosts between eight and 11 fishing tournaments each year, depending on the season and conditions. These events are funded by state and municipal support from each county, based on their ability to contribute to the organization of each tournament.

The Cancun fishing tournament, the Captain Ferrat Cup, has become a tradition, particularly for the often overlooked community of Puerto Juárez. The tournament aims to involve local people, who are often left out of other events. "Despite being a small fishing port with fewer resources than places like Isla Mujeres or Puerto Morelos, they are still fishermen and part of Cancun. We hold the tournament there to keep it local and continue establishing it as a tradition," Fernández explained.

Francisco Fernández, president of the Nautical Associates of Quintana Roo, added, "The fishing tournament is a significant economic opportunity for Cancun. The revenue it generates is substantial, especially when a visitor rents a hotel for several nights, brings their family, rents a boat for a few days, and more. This could bring in between 15 and 20 thousand dollars per family."

He believes that if this tourism product was more widely recognized, it could greatly benefit the destination. Last year, 54 boats participated in the tournament, and organizers hope to double that number this year. The prize fund has also almost doubled, which should encourage more participants.
