Local sugarcane groups are advocating for Ingenio San Rafael de Pucté to compensate producers for the 140,000 tons of sugarcane that couldn't be harvested due to heavy rainfall. They propose that this payment be deferred to the next harvest season, in line with the existing sugar law.
Evaristo Gómez Díaz, the President of the Local Union of Sugarcane Producers, reassured producers that they would be compensated for the unharvested cane. This agreement was reached by the production and quality committee and is now part of the harvest closing record.
Díaz clarified that the current law stipulates that any losses due to factory-related issues must be fully compensated, minus the costs of harvesting. As the unharvested cane was left in the field, these costs were not incurred.
"We have an agreement, the law is on our side, and we must enforce it for the benefit of all sugarcane producers who unfortunately had some crops left unharvested, mainly due to factory downtime," Díaz stated.
The production and quality committee has agreed to the payment for the 140,000 tons of unharvested sugarcane. This payment will be deferred and enforced in accordance with the law, ensuring the well-being of the sugarcane producers.
