The location of the Rancho Viejo fair is under threat of being changed by the municipal government. This has sparked protest from local landowners in Isla Mujeres who claim that the move is unjustified.
Guadalupe Canul Pacheco, a local landowner, explained that the government is attempting to move the fair to the parking lot of the Ejidatarios Plaza. This would mean it would no longer be held next to the Church of the Virgin of Fatima, its traditional location for over 45 years.
According to official documents, the Directorate of Inspection and Collection of Isla Mujeres has denied a permit for the fair due to planned public works in the area. However, local landowners view this as an attack on their customs and traditions. They argue that the street leading to the fair has always been exempt from public works.
"We disagree with changing the location of the fair to a place that is not ours. We want our artistic lineup not to be cancelled," Pacheco said.
Betty Chuc, another local landowner, highlighted that the first events of the fair are set to begin this Monday. These include religious novenas at the Church of the Virgin of Fatima, a traditional walk and ride to the church, and various vendor stalls.
The 13th of May will see a horse riding event with over 300 riders expected. This will be followed by a midday mass and the distribution of stuffed black turkey. Although the location of the carnival rides and other elements may change, the religious activities will still take place.
The landowners are calling for the return of the dances, carnival rides, and other elements to their traditional location. They argue that this area has the necessary infrastructure, bathroom facilities, and shade from trees.
Pacheco has called for a meeting of the 15 associates and 232 local landowners to discuss the issue before the traditional cattle raising begins.
The landowners are also seeking support from Governor Mara Lezama to intervene on their behalf and allow the Rancho Viejo Fair to continue in its usual location. During a recent press conference, residents of Isla Mujeres also voiced their support for the fair to remain where it has always been held.
In 2023, approximately 5,500 meals were distributed at the fair, although not everyone in attendance received a meal.
