This week, Playa del Carmen mourns the loss of Marciano “Chano” Toledo Sánchez, a pivotal figure in the development of the Riviera Maya, who passed away at the age of 64. Known for his deep commitment to the community, Chano Toledo left an indelible mark on the region, shaping it from a quiet fishing village into the vibrant tourist destination it is today. While his life was not without controversy, his legacy as an entrepreneur, activist, and political leader remains a cornerstone of Solidaridad’s history.
A Life Dedicated to Service
Born in 1959 in San Luis Potosí, Toledo moved to Quintana Roo in 1980, seeking new opportunities. His early career saw him transition from boxing to entrepreneurship, where he quickly established himself as a local leader. Toledo’s leadership became particularly evident after Hurricane Gilberto devastated the region in 1988. In the storm’s aftermath, he rallied the community to support the creation of the municipality of Solidaridad, separating Playa del Carmen from Cozumel’s administrative oversight.

This bold move allowed Playa del Carmen to focus on its own development, catering to the needs of its growing population and burgeoning tourism industry. Chano’s efforts were instrumental in laying the groundwork for the city’s infrastructure and governance.
Environmental Advocate and Activist
Toledo was also known for his passionate defense of the environment. He spearheaded opposition against Calica (later known as Sac Tun), a company engaged in limestone extraction in the Riviera Maya. His activism, marked by persistence and determination, played a significant role in the eventual closure of the company’s operations, safeguarding the natural resources of the region.

Environmental conservation became a defining feature of Toledo’s public life. He believed that development in the Riviera Maya should balance economic progress with the protection of its unique ecosystems—a vision that resonated with many in the community.
Political Aspirations
Toledo’s influence extended beyond activism into politics. He served as a regidor (councilman) in Solidaridad and, in 2021, ran for the presidency of the municipality under the Movimiento Ciudadano banner. His campaign emphasized themes of sustainable growth and social equity, reflecting his lifelong dedication to the region’s well-being.

Controversies and Challenges
Despite his achievements, Toledo’s career was not without its challenges. In 2022, reports surfaced alleging his involvement in corruption, particularly concerning land deals and urban development projects. These accusations sparked debate over his methods and highlighted the complexities of managing rapid development in a region undergoing explosive growth.
Critics questioned some of his approaches, but supporters often pointed to his long history of community service and his focus on protecting the Riviera Maya’s natural beauty as evidence of his true intentions.

A Legacy That Endures
Marciano “Chano” Toledo Sánchez will be remembered as a man of vision and action. His efforts to establish Solidaridad, his relentless advocacy for environmental protection, and his role in shaping Playa del Carmen’s identity have left a lasting impact on the Riviera Maya. While his life included moments of controversy, his contributions to the community and his dedication to its people remain his enduring legacy.
As Playa del Carmen reflects on the life of one of its most influential figures, residents are reminded of Chano’s own philosophy: that growth and development must always consider the well-being of the people and the land that sustains them.
Rest in peace, Chano Toledo.
