A reporter, Charly Solís, has been assaulted by members of the Municipal Public Security Secretariat (MPSS) in Playa del Carmen. These same officers were previously involved in an incident where they assaulted, tortured, and robbed a worker from the Hotel Xcaret Arte, accusing him of driving a stolen vehicle.
Solís, who runs the fan page "Semanario Playa Noticias" and primarily reports on police news in the municipality of Solidaridad, was broadcasting live when the incident occurred. He reported assaults, arbitrary detention, and threats against himself, his family, and other media colleagues present at the scene.
While Solís admits to committing a traffic violation by driving in the wrong direction to cover a police matter, he contends that the violent treatment he received, including arrest on false charges of drunkenness, was an excessive response. He also alleges that his human rights were violated during the incident.
According to Solís, the officers began assaulting him and his colleagues when they realized they were being recorded. They also attempted to seize their cell phones. Solís' wife was also assaulted, but was not arrested. His vehicle was impounded at the time of his arrest.
While in custody, Solís reports that he and his colleagues were subjected to taunting and threats. He was handcuffed tightly and when he asked for the cuffs to be loosened, the officers merely mocked him. His colleagues were also arrested on charges of interfering with the administration of justice.
Once the officers recognized Solís, their attitude changed and he was released hours later. He was not given a ticket or any documentation explaining the reason for his detention. The officers also allegedly erased all evidence of his arrest and returned his vehicle in a disordered state.
Solís also claims that 4,500 pesos were taken from his wallet while he was in custody. He has identified one of the assaulting officers as Rubén Reyes, who was in patrol car 84055. This is the same unit that was involved in the previous assault on the citizen accused of driving a stolen vehicle. This incident adds to a growing list of reports concerning malpractice in police interventions in the area.
