The Mexican Boat Rodeo, the largest fishing tournament in Cozumel, is set to make a comeback in May 2025 for its 54th edition. This significant sporting event typically draws over a hundred boats per tournament. In light of its return, a tourism promotion campaign is set to launch.
The official announcement was made this Wednesday, revealing plans to rejuvenate the sport fishing sector on the island. The tournament aims to recapture its "golden age," when as many as 197 boats would actively participate in the catch and release of various marine species.
Alejandro Martín Gaeta, president of the tournament's board, expressed hopes for substantial participation in this edition, particularly from local fishermen. This event is the island's largest tournament and the second largest in Quintana Roo, only outdone by the tournament in Isla Mujeres.
Fishing judge, Bernardo Alonso Marrufo, explained that the tournament's goal is to significantly boost sport fishing and, in turn, enhance this segment of tourism. Cozumel’s waters are home to important species such as the blue marlin and swordfish. The practice of catch and release makes this a sustainable sporting activity.
Municipal president, José Luis Chacón Méndez, stated that the early announcement of the tournament is designed to allow ample time for promotion, thereby ensuring a higher turnout of participants. He also revealed plans to expand the tournament's reach internationally, as it was in previous years, without excluding the participation of the country's boats, in order to continually stimulate the activity.
