As 2024 began, Cancun saw a significant rise in complaints about environmental pollution. The General Directorate of Ecology received a total of 48 complaints, with land pollution being the primary concern, followed by soil, water, and air pollution.

Soil pollution is a grave issue that arises when waste is irresponsibly discarded in natural areas. This practice not only hinders the growth of native plants, rendering the sites infertile, but also fosters an environment ideal for the breeding of disease-carrying insects.

The Climate Action and Environmental Protection Regulation of Benito Juarez states that penalties for soil pollution can range from 50 to 100 Measurement and Update Units (UMA). This translates to a potential fine of up to 10,857 pesos.

In comparison, during the first quarter of 2023, there were 238 complaints about environmental damage. The majority of these were related to land pollution and pollution in urban water bodies. It's crucial for residents to understand the gravity of this issue and take steps to protect their environment.
