Riviera Maya, known for its dreamlike landscapes and unique natural treasures, is a destination that captivates millions. However, pollution threatens the beaches and ecosystems that make this place an earthly paradise.
Recognizing our collective responsibility, Tulum Circula, Day Zero Festival, and Lostnights events have partnered with local and international organizations and hundreds of volunteers. Their shared cause is the cleaning and conservation of our coasts. On December 7th, a cleanup day is scheduled at four strategic locations in the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The goal of this massive effort is to remove over a ton of plastic waste and microplastics that have accumulated from around the globe, causing damage to marine and terrestrial ecosystems.
Day Zero, a globally recognized festival that merges electronic music with environmental consciousness, has made sustainability its core mission. In collaboration with Tulum Circula, an organization dedicated to regeneration and sustainable waste management, they aim to make a significant impact on preserving the natural environment of Tulum and its surrounding areas.
Grace Barros, Sustainability Director of Day Zero, said, "The magic of the Riviera Maya is not just in its white sand beaches and crystal-clear waters, but also in the biodiversity that it supports. As a community, we have a responsibility to protect this sacred place. Music can be a powerful tool to inspire meaningful change."
On December 7th, over 200 volunteers will participate, supported by institutions such as CONANP, the National Guard, and the Directorate of Environmental Sustainability. The cleanup will focus on critical areas like Punta Piedra, Xcacel-Xcacelito Sanctuary, and locations within the Sian Ka’an Reserve. A detailed system for sorting and weighing the collected waste will be used, categorizing items into groups like PET plastic, glass, aluminum, textiles, and more.
The initiative extends beyond simple cleanup. It's part of a broader annual program, #DayZero2025, which includes reforestation, environmental education campaigns, public space recovery, and waste management training.
Efforts like these not only benefit Tulum, but they also contribute to a global effort to mitigate environmental impact.
The event is open to all who wish to participate. Whether you're a nature lover or an electronic music fan, this call to action aims to create a more conscious and committed community dedicated to preserving our shared home.
