From Seaweed to Sandals: Riviera Maya’s Eco-Friendly Transformation.

An innovative environmental initiative in the Riviera Maya is transforming sargassum, a type of seaweed, into sustainable products. The Sarga Pellet, a blend of sargassum and EVA, is being used to create items such as sandals.

The project aims to repurpose sargassum, which often clutters beaches, into eco-friendly alternatives. The seaweed is harvested, cleaned, compressed, and ground into a flour-like substance. This is then transported to León, Guanajuato for production.

Products created from this process, including sandals and pet collars, are currently sold in luxury hotel boutiques. There are plans to expand the market throughout the Riviera Maya and Quintana Roo regions.

The project also intends to form strategic partnerships to collect sargassum before it washes ashore. This will be done in collaboration with private sector entities and local authorities.

This initiative illustrates how a problem can be turned into an opportunity. It not only generates inventive products but also promotes environmental conservation.
