Rooftop pools are becoming increasingly popular in the Quintana Roo region, rivalling traditional beach clubs like Playa Mamitas in the Riviera Maya. These rooftop venues offer a new way to enjoy the area, featuring swimming pools, restaurants, bars, and live music or DJ performances.

This initiative provides a unique blend of entertainment and relaxation for adult tourists. According to Carolina Ortiz, these rooftop venues with swimming pools and other amenities add extra appeal to the tourism sector and represent a new market opportunity.

The rise of rooftop venues is partly due to climate change issues, which have been causing sargasso seaweed to wash up on the beaches for years. Now, coastal erosion is adding to the problem. These issues affect popular beach clubs like Mamitas, which used to be a favourite spot for younger visitors and foreign tourists, particularly during spring break.

Ortiz reports that these rooftop venues are currently operating at 87 percent capacity, with the majority of visitors coming from the United States and Canada. "We believe there's potential for national tourism to take off," she says. "As a destination, we hope to attract more visitors. We're working on advertising at the new Tulum airport, but we're also considering options near Cancun airport, as people are still travelling there."
