Sargassum Takeover Threatens Mahahual Tourism

Residents and merchants of Mahahual, a key tourist hotspot in southern Quintana Roo, have started to witness the influx of sargassum on their local shores. The increasing presence of this large seaweed is causing concern, as promises of mitigation efforts have not been fulfilled.

Local authorities had previously announced plans to install sargassum barriers, with a total of 1,450 meters of protection slated for the Mahahual coastline in early April. However, these barriers are yet to be seen, leading to frustration among the local community.

The situation is causing worry in Mahahual, as the sargassum invasion is impacting water-based activities and discouraging beach tourism. The seaweed can cause skin irritation and emits an unpleasant odor, further deterring visitors.
