In 2025, the shores of Quintana Roo are bracing for a significant surge in sargassum landings, with projections indicating a 30% increase compared to the previous year. This uptick means that the region could see more than 57,000 tons of this brown seaweed washing ashore, surpassing the approximately 44,000 tons recorded in 2024. The primary drivers behind this phenomenon are rising ocean temperatures and an increase in nutrient levels in the water.

The Sargassum Monitoring Network estimates that between 23 and 25 million tons of sargassum will enter the Atlantic Ocean in 2025. For Quintana Roo’s beaches, the most critical period is anticipated between May and June, aligning with the region’s typical sargassum season, which usually spans from May to November. However, variations in climate and ocean conditions can shift these timelines. For instance, in 2023, the sargassum season began in February and extended through October, highlighting the influence of environmental factors on the proliferation of this macroalga.

Sargassum often arrives accompanied by “sea grapes,” small bubbles or vesicles that float on the surface. Together, they form a complex ecosystem that can be both beneficial and problematic, depending on their abundance and context.

The massive accumulation of sargassum on beaches poses several challenges. Ecologically, it can lead to coastal erosion and disrupt marine ecosystems. Economically, the unsightly and odorous piles deter tourists, leading to potential declines in visitor numbers and impacting the local economy.

As Quintana Roo prepares for this anticipated increase, understanding the factors contributing to sargassum growth and implementing effective management strategies will be crucial in mitigating its impact on the environment and tourism industry.
