The 2024 sea turtle nesting season in Playa del Carmen has come to an end. The season concluded with a significant rescue effort due to heavy rainfall. Local authorities stepped in to protect around 90 nests that were at risk. Yamili Colli, the Deputy Director of Environmental Education and Outreach in Solidaridad, provided this information.
Despite early predictions of a larger turtle turnout, the final count was similar to the previous year's figures. The local government directly supervised 23 kilometers of coastline, where they recorded 990 nests. In total, the entire coastline of Solidaridad saw 3,099 nesting sites.
Yamili Colli noted that there are still some nests left to be released. She praised the efforts of the Municipal Sea Turtle Committee, which consists of 58 members. This group includes hotel owners, Federal Maritime Terrestrial Zone concessionaires, and local authorities.
Their coordinated efforts and vigilant protection allowed thousands of nests along the coast to remain safe. This ensured the survival of future generations of sea turtles, despite the challenging weather conditions this season.
