The Security and Justice Board has announced plans to install 57 new surveillance points in Solidaridad, following a meeting held in Puerto Aventuras. The surveillance points, which will be operational from October, were discussed with members of the private sector, including about 20 businesspeople from the Riviera Maya.
The meeting was led by Raciel López Salazar, Attorney General of the State; Julio César Gómez Torres, State Secretary of Citizen Security; and José de la Peña Ruiz de Chávez, Coordinator of the Security Cabinet. They outlined plans to install 108 cameras across 52 new surveillance points in Solidaridad, in addition to incorporating cameras from private companies through the "Guardian 911" program.
Gómez Torres assured that there will be complete coverage from Tulum to Cancún by the State Highway Police, with reinforcement measures planned for Solidaridad. He also announced the formation of the "Centurion Group", a unit dedicated to combating extortion, mirroring the efforts of the Orion Group, which focuses on theft.
The Centurion Group, which falls under the Special Prosecutor's Office for Kidnapping and Extortion, will hold weekly meetings with business groups. The group has already made significant strides, arresting an extortionist caught in the act, as well as another individual attempting extortion.
Prosecutor Raciel López reported on the progress made in his first 10 months in office, including the arrest of 79 criminals and the execution of 83 arrest warrants in Solidaridad. This has resulted in a total of 161 individuals being incarcerated, 103 of whom were arrested for high-impact crimes.
Among those arrested were 49 members of seven criminal groups and six human traffickers, totaling 55 high-priority detainees. The Prosecutor's Office released a statement following the meeting, stating that they "agreed to design and implement strategies with a greater degree of intervention", and will seek to ensure that criminals face justice effectively through close inter-institutional coordination and analysis of judicialization mechanisms.
