The Foundation of Parks and Museums of Cozumel (FPMC) recently held a workshop titled "Discovering the Wings of Cozumel" for residents of a local senior home. The goal of the workshop was to introduce the seniors to the rich diversity of bird species on the island and encourage them to monitor the urban birds in their local areas. FPMC's general director, Juanita Alonso Marrufo, stressed the value of involving seniors in environmental conservation efforts. She noted that their life experience and knowledge can greatly enhance these initiatives. Furthermore, she pointed out that such activities can boost their physical and mental health by fostering a connection with nature. This aligns with the principles of the New Agreement for Welfare and Development of Quintana Roo, a project spearheaded by Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa.

The workshop was organized by the Department of Pedagogy and Social Assistance (PAS) and the Urban Heart Park and was held at the park of the System for Comprehensive Family Development (DIF) Cozumel, which also houses the senior home. Biologist Adrián Andrés Tun Cano and natural resources manager María Carolina Can Martínez, a member of the "Birdwatching Cozumel" collective, led the event. They provided information about the various bird species on the island, highlighting distinguishing features and the vital roles these birds play in the ecosystem as environmental indicators and seed dispersers. The seniors also had the chance to learn how to use binoculars for birdwatching.

Throughout the event, the seniors shared their own memories and stories related to birdwatching, including regional names for certain species. This reminiscing not only allowed them to revisit cherished moments but also helped to strengthen their connection with nature. The event concluded with educational games made from recycled materials, focused on bird observation and environmental conservation, further reinforcing their commitment to preserving ecosystems.
