In a shocking incident, a suspected criminal leader, known as Hector "N" or "Pichilu", was shot dead by two hitmen in the "El Coctelito" restaurant in Cozumel. The attack also resulted in a two-month-old baby being injured.
The incident occurred around midnight when the hitmen stormed into the restaurant, situated on Rafael E. Melgar avenue between streets 10 and 12. Hector "N", a taxi driver believed to be a criminal leader, was their target. Tragically, during the shooting, a baby was grazed by a bullet on his foot.
The shooting took place in a bustling establishment and sent shockwaves through the crowd. Witnesses reported that the hitmen directly targeted "Pichilu", who was fatally wounded and died on the scene a few minutes later.
The injured infant, who was with his parents at the time, sustained minor injuries. He was rushed to a nearby hospital for immediate medical attention and is now reported to be in a stable condition.
Following the shooting, the assailants managed to escape on foot via the restaurant's back exit. Despite a search operation launched by municipal and state police, the culprits remain at large.
Emergency paramedics at the scene confirmed Hector "N"'s death. Officials from the State Attorney General's Office (FGE) arrived shortly after to initiate proceedings. As part of the ongoing investigation, experts have collected ballistics evidence and taken witness statements.
This incident marks yet another violent episode in Cozumel, which has seen a surge in such incidents in recent months. These are believed to be related to conflicts between criminal groups vying for control of illegal activities on the island. This incident is reported to be the first execution of 2025.
