A cenote dome in Xocén, located just a block away from the local police station, collapsed last night, causing a massive sinkhole. The incident, which occurred around 10 pm on 6th Street by 7th, resulted in the fall of a large ceiba tree. The tree, measuring 3 meters in width and 15 meters in height, was situated atop the cenote.
Eyewitnesses reported that the fallen tree created a sinkhole approximately 20 meters in diameter. Thankfully, there were no reported injuries as the area was deserted at the time of the collapse. Emergency services, including police and firefighters from the Public Security Secretary (SSP), were quick to respond, cordoning off the area to prevent any accidents. The Municipal Civil Protection also arrived on the scene to evaluate the situation and implement necessary preventive measures.
Valladolid's mayor, Alfredo Fernández Arceo, was present at the site. He expressed relief that there were no injuries or fatalities, stating, "In situations like this, where nature acts unpredictably, the absence of injuries or loss of life is the most important outcome.” He informed that municipal and state police, along with firefighters, are already on the scene. He urged the public to avoid the area while necessary assessments are conducted.
The unexpected collapse of the cenote has stirred various reactions among the local community. Some residents have referenced local superstitions and prophecies. According to local lore, there is a prophecy in Xocén that foretells the opening of a cenote's dome and the appearance of an old woman who would trade cenote water in cocoyol shells, in exchange for a child for each portion of water.
