Six individuals were injured in a significant traffic accident at the intersection of Arco Vial and Chemuyil Avenue. Four of these injuries were severe, and two were minor. The accident, which occurred around 7:30 pm on a Friday, was caused by a drunk driver and resulted in estimated damages of 350,000 pesos.
Emergency services were quickly on the scene, with ambulances rushing to aid the injured. One woman had to be extricated from a truck driven by a man named Benito Castro. Castro attempted to flee the scene after checking on his wife and the condition of his vehicle, but authorities apprehended him.
Among the injured was a taxi driver who was exiting a gas station when his vehicle was struck by a white truck. This truck had been hit by the initial car and was propelled into the taxi. The impact littered Playa del Carmen Boulevard with debris and left the six occupants of the vehicles in shock.
The instigator of the accident, Benito Garcia, was driving a gray Hyundai GLX 35 with the license plate USW-011-H from Quintana Roo. The 40-year-old Tabasco native was traveling on Chemuyil Avenue when he failed to stop at Playa Boulevard and veered into oncoming traffic. This resulted in a violent collision with a white Chevrolet truck traveling on the Boulevard. Two of the injured individuals did not require hospitalization.
Garcia then lost control of his vehicle and collided with a taxi – a white Nissan Versa with the commercial number 2735 and plates A-774-TRZ from Quintana Roo State. The taxi was attempting to merge onto Playa del Carmen Boulevard when it was abruptly stopped by the collision. The damage caused by the accident is estimated to be at least 350,000 pesos.
Four of the injured individuals were seriously hurt and required transportation to the hospital. The remaining two did not require hospital care. The damaged vehicles were towed to an impound lot, and legal proceedings have been initiated with the State Attorney General's Office to hold those responsible accountable for their actions.
