“Semarnat Rejects 6 Projects in Quintana Roo’s Natural Areas – Including Hotel in Mangroves!”

The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) has rejected six proposed projects in northern Quintana Roo. These projects included a notable proposal for a hotel construction in the Nichupté mangroves in Cancún.

One of the declined projects was the creation of an artificial reef in the marine area of the Grand Coral resort in Solidaridad. This was intended to prevent beach erosion. However, Semarnat determined that such a measure would not be beneficial to the marine environment.

The most significant project, named "The View", involved the construction of a 538-room hotel in the third phase of the Cancún Hotel Zone, adjacent to the Nichupté mangrove reserve. Despite an environmental analysis carried out by the project's promoters, Semarnat concluded that the project could not guarantee the preservation of the local ecosystems.

Other projects that were denied included the creation of a materials bank in Felipe Carrillo Puerto to support the Maya Train project, and the construction of a dock and a house in Cancún. These were deemed to have less environmental impact compared to the other projects, but were still rejected.
