Driver Falls Asleep at Wheel, Causes Dramatic Playa del Carmen Crash

A damaged semi-truck and a truck's cab involved in an accident at the side of a road with debris scattered around.

A severe car crash occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, May 21, when a driver fell asleep at the wheel and veered off the road. The incident took place at the entrance to the municipality of Solidaridad, around 6:30 a.m.

The driver had been on his way from the city of Tulum to a landfill in Playa del Carmen. Unfortunately, the combination of wind, road noise, and fatigue proved too much, causing the driver to fall asleep.

The vehicle sustained significant damage in the crash. The front fascia and axle of the front tires were dislodged, leaving the vehicle stranded by the side of the road.

Bystanders who witnessed the accident promptly called 911. Paramedics arrived on the scene to provide first aid. They determined that, despite the severity of the crash, the driver had not sustained serious injuries and did not require hospitalization.

However, the vehicle was in such a dilapidated state that it had to be towed to the impound lot. A tow truck was called to remove the vehicle and collect the scattered debris.

In light of this incident, authorities have issued a reminder to the public about the dangers of driving while tired. They warn that such behavior can lead to serious, even fatal accidents, and can cause harm to others.
