Social media has become a new marketplace for the sale of illicit drugs among young people in Riviera Maya cities like Playa del Carmen, Tulum, and Cancún. The sale of substances such as marijuana, cocaine, psychotropic pills, and various stimulants is increasing, despite the seeming indifference of local authorities. This trend has positioned Solidaridad as a significant drug consumer in Mexico, according to multiple studies. The global online illicit drug market is estimated to be worth between 200 and 600 billion dollars annually.

Riviera Maya's popular tourist spots are now grouped with cities like Tijuana, Guadalajara, Monterrey, Mexico City, Puebla, Mérida, and Veracruz, where drugs are frequently sold via social networks. These transactions occur with alarming ease, lack of discretion, and open access to any potential buyer.

One social media account, @Mr420pdc, advertises marijuana availability from 9 am to 9 pm in Playa del Carmen. The account, created in October, posts images of marijuana portions, praising their quality and offering home delivery. They even run promotions for their products.

Another account, @weeddoctorMX, created in 2022, offers a variety of drugs, including what appears to be cocaine and LSD. The account advertises immediate delivery in Playa del Carmen and shipping throughout Mexico, inviting users to join their cannabis community on Telegram for promotions and more.

This rise in social media drug sales highlights the growing risks associated with online drug transactions and the need for international organizations to issue warnings and take action.
